I wanted to decorate the front internal bulkhead and ended up making the interior side a Bing satellite image of where the bus came from (Penn Yann in upstate New York) and the exterior by the driver the cover from the classic book by Tom Wolfe  "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" which was designed by Milton Glaser (of I "heart" NY fame).  The book is the story of Ken Kesey's (author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest) epic LSD fuelled trip across the USA in a 1939 International School Bus (called Furthur/Further).  There is also a DVD of that trip called "Magic Trip".
Further/Furhur - the bus used by Ken Kesey to cross the USA in 1964
Was thinking about making the outside psychedelic, but decided against it!
Magic Trip
Milton Glaser's design for the Electric Kool Aid Acid Test book cover
Draw around each colour with a fine black marker pen
Bought an old projector for £1 on eBay. Trace the black lines onto transparent film
Project onto the bulkhead
The design is then transferred onto the bulkhead
Trace the lines with a pencil
In closer detail
Sampler paint pots from Homebase
I used 23 different colours
Dulux water based paint
First few sections
You need several coats per area
The colours don't exactly match the original
Halfway there
Almost finished
Bulkheads in place
The sliding door panel
Bulkhead with door closed
I fitted the sliding door at the end
The bulkhead on the inside was a satellite image of where the bus came from.  It would have driven round these roads
I tried various images to see what they would look like
Examples of satellite images. I used the one on the left
You need Offline Map Maker http://www.allmapsoft.com/omm/index.html
Use Bing to get the Long/Lat of the area you want and export sheets to BMP files
You need to do the maths to divide the long/lats into 8 to give 64 contiguous panels
The resultant images are a bit of a jigsaw puzzle. Print in colour onto A3 sheets and trim white edges
One row was slightly bigger than the others (my maths error!)
Partially pasted
Completed images on the bulkhead
